Prof. Margaret Alston, Professor, School of Humanities and Social Science, The University of Newcastle, Australia

Prof. Margaret Alston is a Professor of Social Work at the School of Humanities and Social Science, The University of Newcastle, Australia. She was also a Professor of Social Work and Head of Department at Monash University, where she established the Gender, Leadership and Social Sustainability (GLASS) research unit.

Under her direction, the GLASS research unit at Monash built a broad but critical gender-based research agenda investigating diverse issues such as climate change, violence against women, leadership and social sustainability.

Prof. Alston was engaged as a UN gender expert by the Gender Division of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) studying gender and climate change in India for 2008. In 2009, she was also appointed as a UN gender expert by UN-Habitat to advise on the detailed report on the impact of climate change on global cities.
